Mount Abu
The diversity of flora and fauna at Mount Abu is astounding and won admirations and adulations from foreign tourists. The expansive wildlife sanctuary at the Gurushikhar or the highest point of Aravallis shelters a number of nearly extinct and endangered ecotic wildlife species such as leopards, wild boars, Sambar, and langurs. The colorful flowering trees add to the natural scenic beauty of the region. Mount Abu harbored several tribes and Indian sages made it their abode because of its quaint tranquil surroundings and nature’s bounty. Mount Abu is not only one of the prettiest and most popular hill resorts of India but is a major pilgrimage center for Hindus and Jains. Rajputs consider it most sacred because it was here that four fire-born Rajput clans of Chauhans, Parmaras, Solankis, and Pratiharas sprung out of holy fire during a Yagna. Mount Abu was more famous as a pilgrimage center for Shaiv and Vaishnav sects of Hindus till the 11th century but after that, it gained prominence as a Jain pilgrim center. Mount Abu is the only hill resort in Rajasthan. The sages gave it the honor of being titled as the Hill of Wisdom. Situated on a hillock standing independent from the rest of the Aravalli range divide by a deep gorge, it is known as the Olympus of Rajasthan. The rich vegetations and thick green forests make it an oasis in the desert land. It offers a reprieve to the tourists from extreme climates of the plains below and is one of the finest destinations for pleasure and leisure trips. International tourists find it very interesting that how the tribes of the region have kept their authentic traditions and lifestyles in pristine condition, even in the wake of 21st century. Religious monuments, especially Jain Shrines, at Mount Abu are quite famous too. The gigantic rocks towering on hilltops in some of the most unusual shapes and in precarious positions attract attentions invariably as you ascend to the hill station of Mount Abu. Standing of ages, they are work of Nature’s forces and add to its creative displays.

Mount Abu was basically a tribal region surrounded by hills covered with thick lush green forests. During the Raj period, it was discovered as an ultimate hill retreat where royal and noble families of India as well as British went to relax and rejuvenate in the lap of nature. The European-style bungalows of the British and Thikanas or royal holiday lodges of the Indian princes and their noblemen present an interesting contrast of architectural styles and preferences. The tribal communities present other variety of abodes and lifestyles that are more primitive but eco-friendly in nature.
