Kota

City Palace, KotaKota stands between its glorious medieval past and modern onslaught of industrialization. On one hand as the Hydro Electric Plant on the Chambal River and one of the Nuclear Power Plants in India and on the other, it has the Kota Fort that forms one of the major tourist attractions of the city. Overlooking River Chambal, the Kota Fort has some elaborately painted chambers and a rich museum collection of choicest arts and artifacts. The walls covered with gold stained glass paintings, ceilings with ultra-rich silver mittor work, grand wall paintings and exquisite stone idols gracing the Raj Mahal or the Royal Palace form the highlights of the fort.

Kota was once part of the mighty kingdom of Bundi but later it grew to become a separate princely state on its own. Impressive forts, grand splendid palace, and intricately carved temples that are several centuries old and yet in pristine condition – all tell tales of the historical and architectural glory of the city’s past. Bhils ruled the area until Jait Singh of Bundi severed the head of their chieftain Koteya and raised the first fort at the site, where it was buried. Rao Deva, the head of Hada clan, ruled Kota for a long time. During the reign of Mughal Emperor Jehangir, Rao Ratan Singh gifted the territory of Kota to his second son Madho Singh.

With time, Kota became even more powerful, richer and bigger than its parent state. Bhim Singh, who held a Mansab of five thousand, played a crucial rule in Kota’s history and was first in his dynasty to be granted the title of ‘Maharao’. A part of the Hadoti region, Kota is a treasure house of tourist delights. Along with Bundi, Baran, and Jahalwar, Kota forms an unforgettable tourism destination full of pre-historic caves, formidable forts, classic paintings, and beautiful spots along the banks of River Chambal rushing to the land from Vindhya ranges. Kota also boasts of the largest fertilizer plant in Asia and precision instrument unit adding to its repertoire as an upcoming industrial giant.
