Jaipur

Hawa Mahal, JaipurJaipur, the Capital of Rajasthan, was founded by Maharaja Jai Singh II (1693-1743). Famous as the Pink City, the official color for the buildings of old Jaipur city is rose pink and has an interesting legend attached to it. In 1876, Prince of Wales, who later came to be known as Edward VII, visited Jaipur. Some revolutionary tried to insult him by calling him ‘a pink-faced monkey’ in the local language. Though, the prince could not understand what was said, Maharaja Man Singh felt quite embarrassed.

True to his traditional notions of hospitality, he ordered the entire city to be painted pink and made it the official color of the city in the honor of the prince. Jaipur is a major tourist attraction that offers a number of historical monuments. For those who love adventure and exploration, Jaipur is the ideal place, flanked by as many as four well preserved forts standing on hilltops on four sides of the city. The massive bastions of these forts crown the city below. Rose pink color houses and buildings lining the street look enchanting in the sunset colors.

Besides Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, and the City Palace, there are many lesser-known places worth seeing at Jaipur. The city is very well planned and organized. Wide streets were especially designed to allow free movement to elephants - royal mounts of Maharajas of Jaipur. A first-time visitor to Jaipur is enticed by its various charms, which include endless noteworthy architectural specimens that seem to constitute an open-air museum, and a variety of handicrafts and coveted items such as tie-and-dye and batik fabrics, carpets, and jewellery. Enameled gold jewellery pieces with inlaid work of precious stones, pearls and turquoise look like colorful miniature paintings are internationally famous for their beauty, finesse and creativity.
