Ajmer

Ajmer Sharif, AjmerAjmer has an interesting past. It is blissfully located in a green oasis-like area surrounded by barren hills, as if to highlight the contrasting landscapes. Raja Ajai Pal Chauhan founded the city of Ajmer in the seventh century and it remained one of the major power seats of Chauhan rulers till 1193 AD. Situated in the southwest of Jaipur, the legendary Prithviraj Chauhan lost Ajmer to the invader Muhammad Ghauri in the Second Battle of Tarain.

Presenting a unique example of harmonious and tolerant living, Hinduism and Islam both has a profound hold over Ajmer. Both Hindus and Muslims flock to the Dargah Sharif or the Tomb-Shrine of the mystic Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti during Urs with equal reverence. A pilgrimage place for both Hindus and Muslims, Ajmer Sharif or the Dargah attracts thousands of domestic and international tourists and pilgrims who come here to pay their homage to Khwaja Sahib and seek his blessings.

The prestigious Mayo College at Ajmer was set up by the British as a school that focuses on developing wards of Indian nobility in exclusive English ways and mannerisms. An icon for culture and education, Mayo College retains its exalted position to this day. The hill fort built by the founder of Ajmer is in ruins now while there are several Mughal legends attached to the place. It is believed that it was here that Sir Thomas Roe and Mughal Emperor Jehangir first met – a business deal that later turned into a nightmare for Mughals and allowed a loophole to British to enter the political framework of the country of India.

Scindias took over Ajmer briefly in 1818 and then handed it over to British. Thus, Ajmer was one of the only regions that were directly under the rule of the East Indian Company when the great Indian mutiny of 1857 took place. Ajmer is one of the popular bases for Pushkar tours, which is just 11 km from here. Separated from the city of Ajmer by the Nag Pahar or the Snake Mountain, Pushkar is a small town with the sacred Pushkar Lake and the only consecrated temple of Lord Brahma in the world. The Camel Fair of Pushkar is one of the most interesting and unique fairs and festivals of Rajasthan and the larges of its kinds in the world. Over 70,000 camels are traded here and colorful attires and folk performances of Rajasthani people are a craze among foreign tourists.

While at Ajmer, you must also visit the Anna Sagar Lake, a large man-made lake famous for picnics and weekend family getaways. Ajmer railway
